Happy Thanksgiving!

November 27, 2009

A shocking development in my life, I organized my room. Many know me as quite the slacker sometimes. I usually never organize anything. Luckily, today was a holiday, so I didn’t have anything else to do.

I had two choices, watch “Community” or

organize my room. So I conquered the messiness, by organizing my books from a dusty box to a bookshelf. I fearlessly conquered, but not without its consequences.

For example battle scars:

As I ventured on, I felt assurance and calmness. And knew, that I have organized my room once again to a higher level of zen. This is the finished bookcase.

To many this may just look like another messy liberal bookcase, with niche junk crammed on it. To me this bookcase is a sign of enlightenment. I have the ability to make more of its utilitarian purpose. I think for the first week of its new residency I will look at it with pride. I will let it bask in its plywood glory. The nimble fingers of (insert third world country here)’s fellow hard working employees have made this possible. Thank you, your hard work will be cherished for ever how long this shall last. Also I have added an additional corkboard to my wall as seen below.

Now my inspiration is just a slight head tilt away. This is indeed a great day. Now to move on to the holiday. Very enjoyable and cool Thanksgiving. I reflect on this day with a feeling of complete calmness. This holiday is something important to what US stands for, Consumerism. The Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most hedonistic holidays around. We all gather together and cram food down our gullet, in remembrance of stealing Better Homes and Gardens tips from the Native Americans. Sorry, I almost fell into some kind of preachy hole (Crisis Averted). But no matter, we eat and nap and then sleep early and rise to the masses of bargain hungry people trampling each other in the hopes of achieving presents for our loved ones and their significant others. This is what makes us American. I notice I am prompted by wordpress to capitalize the word American. That’s almost too AMERICAN. Speaking of shopping, I noticed something weird today. As I dug through the Archives of American Consumerism (a.k.a. Thanksgiving Newspaper Ads) I noticed an ad torn in an unusal manner.

What was the reason for this? This was obviously hand-torn, no smooth paper-cut inducing curves. Through further investigation, I noticed it was indeed a mask, maybe.

I knew my Thanksgiving was complete with my new viral newspaper ad mask. Also, I totally just got a hipster runoff vibe from that photo. Not trying to be a biter of Carles blog set up. It just felt appropriate. Well people another good day another post. Good Evening and Good night.

Changing it up.

November 25, 2009

I have began this day with an awakening. As I write this, I am resting up from another long night shift. Honestly, this night shift went easy and consistent. I was very fortunate to not have alot of work weighing me down. As always, I listened to my ipod to escape my mind from my surroundings, while my body took care of the physical work. The playlist of the evening was very chill. Since I have a shuffle, I don’t really have control of what plays. This playlist seemed ever more magical by that aspect. So work was easy playlist was transcendent. When the music doesn’t clutter, my mind seems to control itself better. I have thus made a choice to make some changes to my work. I know that now is the time for change and growth. Basically, I am going back to basics. My thoughts on my work these past few years, has been to keep it crazy, weird, and just messy. I thought that by maybe doing this, I would imprint a style that people would dig. At this point, my work has remained under the radar and without notice. I have added hundreds to my flickr and ran around with a portfolio hoping for a bite or reaction in my favor. In my mindset last night I realized that I need to do what the people want to see. This move is completely unlike me at all. Somewhat cringe-worthy almost in the big picture. After three years of being without the job I want, I feel I must do this. Maybe, being what they want will give me the opportunity to be on a distinctive level later on in my career. Finally, this is my opportunity to give one of my last few drawings under this style I have been using lately. If you feel that I should keep it this way let me know.

November 24, 2009

Checked out a couple illustrators and their work recently, I like alot of the stuff I have been seeing. Inspiration has been coming full force as always. I really am trying to find my style and a uniqueness to it all as a whole. Logo design and character design are the two things that have been constantly filling my sketchbooks. I want to create a unique brand, and something people want to buy or trust in for their own branding. Neatness with a hand drawn feel is something I hope I can achieve. As a member of the (Post Generation-X) or 80’s baby, MTV was something that always inspired me as a kid. Summers when school was out, I was drawn to the television for hours watching music videos. The cool effect was something that appealed me and the masses to watch music videos. I loved design and witnessed a ton of it without even knowing it. One of my favorite things about MTV was the ad bumps in between videos. The Head was a show that interested to me intense and extreme ideas created through the simplest hand drawn designs. I couldn’t get enough of the main alien character. MTV also in it’s early transitions to non-music had some great freaky animated shows too. I loved The Maxx. That show was so consistently  cool and weird and definitely appealed to me.

Also I was addicted to Nickelodeon and its “Nicktoons”, these cartoons were insane. I loved Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy.

Those two shows were the biggest inspirations to me, I would draw those characters over and over again. I mean seriously who cannot deny this stuff.

I just absolutely loved these shows. These characters were all so brilliant and manic, they made make me want to take all my drawings up to the next level. Every new drawing I would do, I would want to add new detail to each line to make the characters look more gross and weirder. I wish alot of the new cartoons today could match these great works. Something about cartoons today seem lost. For the most part, there are hardly any saturday morning cartoons anymore. The only saturday morning cartoons I ever seen is anime. Don’t get me wrong I think anime is a great art form. As I see more and more anime taking over, I wonder where is the great Americana. Where is this generation’s Betty Boop, Popeye, Spongebob, or Bugs Bunny?

Livin’ Visual

November 17, 2009

I am totally addicted to visual bookmarking. As many people may know, visual bookmarking is websites created with admins who post interesting photos. There are all kinds of gems on these sites like this one. I really like getting ideas from all the inspiration. I could seriously spend all day on these sites. Who can deny finding stuff like this.

Been drawing a little bit more lately.  Most recently have had zombies on the mind. I have drawn a couple this past month. It’s is a lot of fun drawing the decay and wrinkles and grossness that is the undead. I don’t know why but I like drawing weird and gross characters. The fun is seeing how exaggerated I can make my brain-hungry friends look.

This one took a while to draw and color. I tried really hard to be as neat as possible. I wanted to make sure the shading worked and gave the right look for a demensional feel. I simplified my other recent undead artist take. This next drawing was meant for a more edgy hand drawn feel. Do you feel I accomplished that?

Sorry about the gap in blog posting. I am trying to find some sort of focus in my life. Hopefully more posts will come.

Old School T!

May 25, 2009

I know it’s been a while since my most recent posts. I have been busy not just procrastinating my days away. Lately I have been working on some new apparel mock-ups (t-shirt designs). I have trying some new techniques I have picked up over time. Alot the shirt designs have been pretty basic. I have even began participating online with alot of critiquing and inspirational skimming through designs. I have recently been updating my twitter as frequently as I can (http://twitter.com/doomsdaychicken ) Add me on twitter to keep up with my works if you like. Threadless is definitely a great place to get inspirational and ideas as of where apparel design is headed and online design communities are headed. By the way, I have been checking out alot of great sites for design inspiration. There is a really fantastic article on http://www.grainedit.com on top 50 artists to follow on twitter. There is alot of potential with adding people from that list on your account. There even break down the member into categories, (i.e. Illustrators, Typography) this is a great way to meet and understand other people and where their ideas come from and take birth.http://www.booooooom.com and http://www.myloveforyouisastampedeofhorses.com is another fantastic find online for an immense collection of design, illustration, and photography. Grain Edit has a great article on 17 websites that should be bookmarked on your computer. I am also posting my photos below.

Chicken is Life

Cool news! I bought a cool retro mask on ebay the other day and just got it in the mail, and cannot wait to use it. I have been interested in old masks ever since I saw animal collective a few years ago. Anyway I have had a ton of ideas lately I have been working on, but I have not fulfilled them yet. Don’t worry it will happen soon. Also, I finished an illustration, another logo idea I have. I have been really fascinated with illustrating animals lately. I tried my best to increase my detail in illustrating with vectors. And I have even been experimenting with flash too, trying to get back into some old habits. I hope that these new illustrations will be to your liking! And still working on the zine!100_0903chickenhen_chicken1

Zine On The Way (Cover)

February 27, 2009

100_0900I have been constantly working on the new zine. I thought that I was show the cover I finished last night. I tried some new font styles. And other oddities were thrown together.I have constantly attempting to find inspiration in everything lately. It can sometimes be overwhelming looking at all the different styles of illustration. I did find out some cool advice from a friend.  So I have been also updating my flickr account like crazy. I have noticed the strength of tagging photos to get more exposure. I also just finishd a new submission for Fecal Face’s Free Fridayz. I am not sure if this submission will get alot of love this time around, it seemed kinda rushed. But I just wasn’t feeling it. I had drawn numerous rough drafts but, nothing was biting. Finally, I thought of something after watching some cartoons today. I don’t know Misadventures of Flapjack is friggin’ genius and beautiful to look at. But all in all, today was a very constructive day. I hope this zine will get some attention for me and exposure for my work. I really want this to work in a positive way for my career and get me out of the retail world. (fingers crossed)

Super Crispy

February 24, 2009

This week it seems like my brain has been in overdrive! I have been doing some many designs lately. Sometimes, my brain is pretty overwhelmed.  I have been trying to expand my portfolio and I think overall, it is going well. Branding is another thing I’m trying to create. I want to make my designs a brand and style that is unique. My next step with branding is creating a website portfolio and some zines. Now it seems alot easier in my head, but I know these things are going to take time. So for right now all I have is a name for my brand. Soon I will have the details up for everyone to see. Right now I am going to keep building the portfolio. So for right here is a design I made today. friedfood1

New Drawings

February 21, 2009

These past couple of days I have had off from my day job I drew a couple new characters. I have been trying a new style that I adopted from checking out some works by scott mcdonald joel trussel who have really scary creepy yet, cool styles. I highly recommend checking out their work. I saw some animations by Joel Trussel on Channel Frederator and was blown away at the assymmetry and uniqueness of his characters. Also Scott McDonald is really talented designer who uses a strange and beautiful “snake-eyed” look to his characters. I saw his work on Channel Frederator too and thought it was cool with it’s old school, yet modern urban look and feel to it. Basically my designs I worked on today were hand sketched then inked with some great new pens I got that are very fluid and smooth. Then, of course colored it PS. I am going to show both before and after. I decided to take out the background on the first character to focus more on the character itself.
